Jim is awakened by the first reconnaissance flights of the American fighters and watches them circle Lunghua airfield. Soon the air drops begin to the prisoner of war camps near Shanghai. Jim searches the river for the American Army and Navy to arrive. Jim is aware of all the scavengers roving the countryside, Chinese peasants, gangs of coolies, renegade Kuomintang soldiers and deserters, and the camp's former British internees. Jim has found another dead Japanese airman and is too unsettled to leave the camp for awhile. He collects all the magazines he can find reading up on all the battles of the war. Food is making him stronger and he starts to realize that the American food drops will stop soon.
