Part 3, Chapter 36 Summary

Jim helps the men unpack the canisters of food. He finds his way back to his old room. Jim notices the scent of Mrs. Vincent in the room and stretches out on her bed. Looking at the room from her perspective Jim imagines that his cubicle area must have looked like a beggar's hovel in Shanghai. He imagines he must have looked like a beast in a kennel and no wonder Mrs. Vincent was irritated by him and wished him dead. He thinks of Mrs. Vincent with affection, and misses Dr. Ransome and Mrs. Pearce. He hopes they might return to Lunghua some day.
