Part 3, Chapter 32 Summary

From the sky falls hail, frozen vapor falling off the wings of the American aircraft flying three miles above them. The prisoners sit up, those who can, and eat the hail over the bodies of the dead around them. The Japanese have gone. Jim climbs into the stands of the stadium and surveys the scene below him. There are over one hundred dead. Jim thinks about Mr. Maxted and feels guilty that he didn't sell his shoes for some food to help keep Mr. Maxted alive. By pretending to be dead Jim has lost both Mr. Maxted and his shoes.

Recalling the night, lying next to the dead, pretending to be dead, Jim realizes he was saved from the night march. He also feels closer to the dead than the living. Long.....
