The procession continues amid the destruction of the American bombing raids. Mr. Maxted stops to rest and Jim encourages him on with promises of food rations up ahead. Jim sees Dr. Ransome in the hospital truck standing among the bodies of the sick. Jim calls out to him that the war is over as they view the last of the Japanese soldiers marching past from the rear of the procession.
