Part 2, Chapter 28 Summary

Jim asks Mr. Maxted if the war is over when he sees the Japanese troops at the camp packing up to leave. The prisoners look at the gates soon to be untended. Jim is nervous at the prospect of leaving the camp. Over the past week there have been rumors that the war was over and Jim's high spirits have become more and more tiresome to those around him. Dr. Ransome has twice slapped him after he ran through the camp shouting at passersby and jumping on the graves of the hospital cemetery. Jim is excited that he might soon see his parents and return to his life on Amhurst Avenue.

Rumor and confusion have exhausted everyone in the camp and over the past few weeks the American air attacks have become.....
