Part 2, Chapter 27 Summary

The ration truck finally arrives with only half its usual load. Jim almost welcomes the hunger when he might again see the mysterious light the Mustang fighters bring. They can hear the Superfortress bombers in the distance. Jim wants to embrace and caress the B-29 bombers. The Mustangs were beautiful but those Superfortresses were in a different class of beauty. Basie sees Jim's ecstasy begin and calms him down.

Jim does chores for Basie while Basie talks about the possibility of prisoners being moved up-country. Jim eventually leaves with his reward, a Readers Digest. He runs into someone he knew from Shanghai who is in the last stages of malaria and tries to help him by offering him the magazine.
