Part 2, Chapter 25 Summary
Jim tends the vegetable garden behind the kitchen and next to the cemetery. He fertilizes the plants with decanted sewage. It is peaceful in the garden and Jim fantasizes staying there forever even after the war. Jim watches a lone kamikaze pilot prepare to take off. Jim talks with Mrs. Philips about joining the Japanese Air Force and she is not sure if he is joking or not. He's not.
Mrs. Philips and another missionary woman are burying the dead in the cemetery by the garden. Jim watches them dig shallow graves not more than a spade's depth, and they cover the bodies with loose soil in mounds that the monsoon rains soften so that arms and legs protrude out. Jim helps them dig for the new burials wanting a deeper trench for them.
Jim has always been impressed by the Christian faith of these two missionary widows. His parents...
