Part 2, Chapter 23 Summary

Jim eats his stolen potato and does his homework. He views the surrounding airfield with the fantasy of the wreckage of the entire Japanese Air Force slowly falling from the sky to Lunghua airfield. Chinese scrap dealers scavenge through the aircraft and Chinese coolies repair the airfield. He notes the newer models of aircraft built to fight the new Superfortress bombers. He recalls he and Basie and Dr. Ransom and all those Chinese dead building the airfield.

Jim is fascinated by the Japanese pilots at the airfield and most of all the kamikaze pilots. Recently more than a dozen of these special attack groups had arrived at Lunghua Airfield and used it for their base against the Americans. The prisoners called them "hashi-crashies."
