Jim and Mr. Maxted gather the rations. Mr. Maxted is exhausted and shrunken and really needs Jim's assistance. He used to represent to Jim all that Jim admired about Shanghai but he now supports him out of nostalgia for his childhood dream of wanting to grow up to be just like him.
Jim moves too quickly for Mr. Maxted to keep up; Jim always has too much energy for those around him. Jim doesn't speak about his parents to Mr. Maxted or ask about Mr. Maxted's son. Jim is afraid his parents will have changed much like Mr. Maxted. Jim learned three years ago that his parents were interned at Soochow but the Japanese would not consider a transfer.
Occasionally now, no food arrives for the day. Jim is reminded of the beggars.....
