Part 2, Chapter 20 Summary

Jim is interned now in Lunghua prison camp with Basie, Dr. Ransome and other British and American prisoners. They have been there three years and the war is now going badly for the Japanese. Jim is now 14 and still working for Basie and under the care of Dr. Ransome. Jim has also developed a strange relationship with one of the guards, Kimura, who used to invite him in to his bungalow and dress up in his kendo armor then beat him with his sword.

Food is becoming scarcer and the guards are almost as poorly fed as the prisoners. The food supply is shrinking faster than the prisoners are dying. Tuberculosis has broken out in Kimura. Dr. Ransom warns Jim not to wear the kendo armor and stay away from Kimura......
