Part 1, Chapter 19 Summary

Jim comforts Dr. Ransom and views the tail planes of parked aircraft in the distance: American Brewster Buffaloes. "Was it here, among the burial mounds, that the American aircraft waited before taking off into his mind?" The driver recognizes this place as Lunghua, their destination.

Lunghua is a very large military airfield with dozens of fighters and repainted American Buffaloes. The airfield is being reinforced by Chinese soldiers prisoner labor. They are placing scavenged roofing tiles and stones into the runway. Jim could see that the Chinese prisoners were emaciated to the point of death. He knew they were being worked to death and thinks that these starving men were laying their own bones as a carpet for the Japanese bombers - a runway of bones. Jim runs to the aircraft to.....
