Part 1, Chapter 18 Summary

Jim is posted as a lookout for the driver of the truck as the journey to the prison camp continues. Now Dr. Ransom is developing an infected wound in his face and has become very weak. In spite of this Dr. Ransom is taking care of Jim by making sure he is getting a full ration from the guards and washing Jim's clothes for him. Jim is still working for the guards as a guide.

The journey is taking quite long and the guards let Jim ride in the front with them. Jim can't read the map but somehow gives them a sense of security. Jim nervously watches the Japanese Air Force on its way to attack the Chinese army. Watching these planes has revived Jim somewhat and he dreams he is.....
