Many of the prisoners are now barely alive. Dr. Ransome is too tired and injured himself to be of much help, his own face bruised, bleeding and gathering pus. He tells Jim he was brave to get the water. They talk about Shanghai and Jim's parents. Jim tells Dr. Ransome that he wants his parents to meet Basie. Basie says he's been taking care of Jim but Jim tells Dr. Ransome that Basie tried to sell him in Shanghai. Dr. Ransome examines Jim's swollen liver and gums as Jim tells him how much he admires the Japanese fighter pilots and their bravery. Jim is becoming distrustful of Dr. Ransome, his long legs, English manner and interest in his teeth. He thinks maybe Dr. Ransome and Basie will team up to rob.....
