Jim first spent a week in the Shanghai central prison, and then was transferred to the detention center at the open-air cinema in Shanghai. To Jim the detention center is like a resort. Jim recalls, before the war, going there to watch cartoons and adventure series.
Soon after his capture Jim came down with an aching fever and vomited blood. Jim guessed that he and most of the thirty or so other detainees were sent there to recover from illnesses, or die from Malaria and dysentery.
Jim was not able to make friends with the Japanese soldiers. Though hungry all the time, Jim was happy. He finally has been successful in surrendering to the Japanese after months of roving the streets.
All around him were people very sick and dying, and family members caring.....
