For three days Jim was haunted by the image of Frank and Basie pulling teeth from corpses. While Frank and Basie slept with a quilt, Jim slept on rice sacks and checked his jaw in the mornings to make sure they had not removed one of his teeth while he slept.
During the day Jim acted as lookout for then as they scavenged the freighters. Basie made sure Jim ate daily and questioned him constantly about his parents. Basie had modeled himself on the women passengers he had served while working as a steward for a passenger line - powdering themselves while smoking.
Afternoons they took Jim to the Chinese markets in Hongkew where they haggled and traded for food. Jim soon realized Basie was trying to sell him to the Chinese merchants,.....
