Part 1, Chapter 10 Summary

Jim goes down to the river front and studies the ships in the deserted Nantao shipyards. He fantasizes eating the ships, the Palace Hotel, the Shell Building and then the whole of Shanghai. Jim sees the Idzumo making ready to sail away and notices scores of Chinese corpses floating amid their paper flowers surrounding the Idzumo, as if celebrating its departure.

Jim focuses on a rusting old freighter and becomes determined to go out to her. He forgets about finding his parents or surrendering to the Japanese. He wondered if all the Europeans had been put in prison camps in Japan. Recently his bicycle was taken from him by a Chinese shopkeeper and his coolie - Jim was too tired and too sick of being slapped to put up a fight for.....
