Jim sets out again to look for food and leaves the dentist's house and moves into a series of others staying a few days in each. He finds little food. Occasionally he finds a box of chocolates which remind him of his parents. He amuses himself by playing parlor games, billiards, and bridge, playing each hand as fairly as he can. He lays down on all the different beds each with their own scents, reading magazines. He finds the toy cupboards in the children's rooms depressing.
Too tired to think much of the future, Jim does realize that he will soon run out of food. He has lost weight and doesn't recognize himself in the mirror. He likens himself to a street urchin with long hair, gray cheeks, looking twice his age......
