Unable to surrender, Jim goes back to Mr. Maxted's apartment and lives there for a week sleeping in his friend's bed. Others are still in the apartment building as well but they are not friendly to him. He is embarrassed by the deep bruise on his face and is glad to be left alone.
Jim finds little to eat in the pantry, just olives and biscuits. As Jim tries to fix his bicycle wheel he realizes he had been badly frightened the day before and is having trouble trying to cope with the sinking of the Petrel and the disappearance of his parents. He is feeling cold, things are slipping from his hands and he can't concentrate.
Next trip out into the town he halfheartedly searches for his parents and notices the city.....
