Part 1, Chapter 2 Summary

As they leave for the party, Jim's family's car runs over the foot of the beggar in residence at the foot of their drive. The beggar has been there for over two months and now, after a week-long cold spell, did not raise his tin to beg. Jim thought him too tired to move as he lay there covered in snow and figured he was too warm under his blanket of snow to move.

All over the town beggars are displaying their hideous deformities and wounds. Refugees are pouring into Shanghai from the surrounding towns and villages. Adults and children bent under bales; rickshaws carrying entire family possessions; legless beggars; spitting beggars.
