Scott Carey

Scott Carey is the main character of this novel. He is a man who is afflicted with a condition in which he loses weight but not mass. The things that he touches, like his clothes or other people, also experience weightlessness. He weighs the same amount both clothed and naked.

Shortly after Scott begins losing weight, he learns that two women who are his neighbors are being run out of business at their new restaurant because they are a married same-sex couple. Scott begins to pay attention to the things being said about the couple and realizes that the people of the town in which he lives are very small minded and short sighted.
