Summary

In Chapter 6, on New Year’s Day, Scott called Mike Badalamente and told him he was planning on taking a trip. Scott asked Mike to keep his cat while he was gone. Mike agreed to do so. He said it was because Scott had done the town a favor by helping Deirdre. Scott was saddened by the thought of giving away his cat, who was also a valued friend.

Scott realized how serious his condition was when he tried to get the mail after a snowfall. He jumped from the porch onto the crusty snow, but because he had no weight, he did not break through the snow. Instead, he fell and slid down the hill to the mailbox. There was no way for him to get any traction on the slick surface to get back up the hill. He finally broke the flag...
