Chapter 9 Summary

When Sloop gets out of the car, Reacher can immediately see the signs of his extended stay in prison. His pallor is pale and he is overweight as a result of substandard and starchy prison food. He happily greets Bobby with much back slapping and then after a short period of initial shyness, Ellie goes to him as well. Bobby steps behind Sloop and has a conversation with Rusty who then comes forward and informs Reacher that this will be a family day, and he will not be invited for lunch or dinner. Reacher slowly agrees, and for hours, stays in the bunkhouse. Later, Carmen brings Ellie out to see her pony, and leaves Reacher to chat with Sloop alone.
