The road symbolizes Isis’s fascination with the world outside of her household, as well as her fascination with people in general. Her favorite activity is to watch the road and wave at passersby. Isis is quite extroverted, which is likely motivated by this general fascination with the outside world.

The Horizon

The horizon symbolizes Isis’s imaginative nature and the geographically restrictive nature of her life. Isis believes the horizon to be the edge of the earth, as she has likely never traveled very far from her home. However, her fascination with the horizon also represents her desire to explore.

The Rake

The rake symbolizes Grandma Potts’s strong, narrow focus on the immediate exigencies of daily life. Grandma Potts scolds Isis for her fixation on imagination and the outside world. Grandma constantly tells Isis to focus on household chores, such as raking the...
