Jealousy

The girls at Harpers Craft Hall dislike Menolly because she is an apprentice rather than living there simply because her parents want her to learn the basics of music. One of the girls learns that Menolly also outranks her and finds this unacceptable. These girls enjoy a certain amount of privilege due to their status at their home Weyrs and do not like losing that status, especially to a girl who is acting like a boy by being an apprentice to the Masterharper. Menolly's position as an apprentice and as an accomplished musician causes a great deal of jealousy on the part of the other girls. Menolly gets into a fight with one of the girls due to this jealousy. However, rather than causing Menolly trouble, the fight ends with the troubled girl leaving the Hall.
