Chapter Ten continues at the ceremony. Tanis doesn't know what the sirens are for, but he makes a deal with Kit. She can have the crown once he and Laurana are safely out of the city. She agrees and Tanis goes to Laurana and takes her by the arm. Suddenly, she whips around and takes Kit's sword. She knocks Tanis off of the platform and jumps after him. The crown falls off of Tanis' head and is lost as all of the Lords send their soldiers to get the crown for them.
