Chapter 16 Summary

Seward, Van Helsing, Arthur and Morris go to Lucy's tomb. The professor recounts the previous day's events, when he and Seward visited and found Lucy in her coffin. He proceeds to open the coffin, and it is empty. The four men go back outside the tomb, where Van Helsing mixes a host (a thin round wafer used for holy communion in many Christian churches) with some putty to fill in the cracks framing the tomb's door to prevent Lucy from reentering the tomb.

Eventually, a white figure looms in the distance, carrying a small child. When the figure comes closer, it is obviously Lucy, though not the Lucy they remember. The Un-Dead Lucy snarls, and her eyes blaze with "unholy light." She flings the child from her arms and approaches Arthur, beckoning him in.....
