1961-1965

The main narrative begins in 1961, although most of the story takes place in 1965. In 1961, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo was assassinated, and a political power vacuum then threatened to create much political instability in the country. As political instability began to grow, many Dominicans decided to immigrate to other countries, primarily the United States. In 1965, Ana is forced to marry Juan and immigrate to the United States with him. The remainder of the main story takes place in 1965 as well.

New York City is the most populous city in the United States.
