Lockboxes

The lockboxes are a symbol of safety. Dick instructs Dan to make a mental lockbox in which he can lock up the physical manifestation of Mrs. Massey, the woman from Room 217 of the Overlook. Dan later makes another lockbox to contain Horace Derwent. These boxes are intended to keep Dan safe from his traumatic memories of the Overlook.

Flies

Flies are a symbol of death. Dan can see nonexistent flies on the face of people who are dying or suffering from a life-threatening illness.
