Summary

In Chapter 9, Grant and Emmet converse about ideas of an afterlife, and even though neither one of them is very religious, they agree that grief and loss tend to encourage belief in an afterlife. Emmet himself is a widower and likes to think of his wife as having an immortal spirit. Billy arrives and interrupts the conversation with his generally nasty demeanor. In Chapter 10, Sean is driving his father’s old truck through New Mexico after having driven from Colorado to other states like California. He is 17 years old. He recalls the day after Caitlin’s disappearance, when the sheriffs told him not to reveal any of his eyewitness observations to anyone but officers of the law.
