Epilogue Summary

Several years have passed since the opening of Decline and Fall and Paul is again seated in his rooms at Scone on the night of the Bollinger Club Dinner, when a knock at the door reveals Peter Pastmaster. Though the young man is already fairly drunk, he asks Paul for another drink. Paul, taking the role of a responsible elder, tries to dissuade him and fails.

When Peter asks why Paul has not spoken to him during the time they have been at Scone together, Paul replies neutrally that it had not seemed important. After a short talk about Margot, who is now married to Maltravers, a.k.a.
