Part 3, Chapter 6 Summary

Shortly after the second dramatic disappearance of Grimes, Paul is summoned before the prison Governor and informed that he will be taken to a private hospital that morning for the removal of his appendix, as ordered by the Home Secretary, Sir Humphrey Maltravers. Paul protests that he has already had his appendix removed, but the Governor waves his objection aside.

Paul's clothes from the trial are returned to him, he is allowed to shave, and he and an escort board a van to take them to the rail station. Paul tries to explain to his escort, as well, that there must have been some mistake, that he has had his appendix removed years ago, but, with a sly wink that suggests something more than a simple mix-up is at work, he warns.....
