Part 3, Chapter 5 Summary

One day, while they are working side-by-side in the quarries, Grimes informs Paul that he can no longer stand the oppression of prison and plans to escape the next chance he gets. The next day, an impenetrable fog suddenly descends over Egdon Heath. Creating a diversion, Grimes manages to get his hands on the warder's horse. Grimes leaps onto the back of the animal and gallops off, disappearing into the dense mist. Though the warder assures the prisoners that Grimes will be back soon enough - no one has ever escaped from Egdon Heath - that night, the horse returns without its delinquent rider, and even the special patrols with their bloodhounds and the guards posted to search all passing cars can come up with no sign of the old bounder.
