Paul enjoys his first four months of solitary confinement in Blackstone so thoroughly that he puts in a request for four more months. This sort of irregularity, however, is not the kind of thing that is allowed to slip by Sir Wilfred Lucas-Dockery without examination. Lucas-Dockery calls Paul into his office. Having asked Paul why he would prefer to remain in solitary instead of working with the other prisoners, he ascertains that Paul has misanthropic tendencies, based on his own feelings of inadequacy in the presence of other people and that he must be re-socialized in a series of stages.
