A few weeks later, Paul is tried and convicted as a white slave trafficker. During his trial, Margot has Paul sent covered gourmet dishes in his cell, though she herself has fled to Corfu. Paul puts forth little defense in the trial and is convicted mainly on the evidence supplied by Arthur Potts. Never suspecting Margot of any wrongdoing, the judge admonishes Paul for having tried to sully the reputation of a stainless society woman and, with that, the public interest that had surrounded the trial of this famous bridegroom fades.
While Paul is still waiting for the conclusion of the trial, however, Peter Beste-Chetwynde visits him in his cell with messages from his mother. Peter tells Paul that it was his idea that Margot flee to Corfu, that Maltravers, who is.....
