As their car approaches King's Thursday, Paul delights in the glowing sunlight of the English Spring, meditating on the age-old beauty of the country. The shock of seeing the stately home, newly re-built in the industrial conception of Otto Silenus, however, snaps him abruptly out of his reverie. Young Peter Beste-Chetwynde takes childish pride in his mother's perversity, while Paul's reaction is more uncertain.
