Part 1, Chapter 1 Summary

In chapter 1, Paul acquires his first job - having been informed by his guardian that he has legal right to the money left him by his deceased father following Scone's accusation of indecent behavior. As suggested earlier by Scone College's porter, and, driven to a hasty decision by his disinheritance, Pennyfeather proceeds to Church and Gargoyle scholastic agents with the intention of becoming a schoolmaster.

Because of the blot of indecent behavior, the injustice of which is never explained, on his record, Pennyfeather is offered a job at Llanabba Castle in South Wales, which, of the four ratings - Leading School, First-Rate School, Good School, and School - rates only 'School.' Pennyfeather is hired by Head of School, Dr. Augustus Fagan, for a minimal salary, with no experience, to teach several.....
