An Unusual Pair Summary
Tao Chi'en continues to practice, and Eliza begins to learn Chinese, so that she can help him with his patients and with growing the herbs that are so vital. They move to a bigger house, and he spoils her with beautiful Chinese furniture for her bedroom, which she supplements with beautifully embroidered English linens.
Eliza decides to make one last attempt to find information about Joaquin and arrives at the desk of Jacob Freemont at the newspaper office and recognizes him immediately. She's still dressed as a boy, so he doesn't recognize her, but does think she is vaguely familiar. Jacob admits that he doesn't have the answers she's looking for after Eliza questions him about Joaquin's ethnicity and his accent.
