Summary

The second section of the novel opens on Callie waking up later in the day that she broke down in her therapist’s office. She catches the end of lunch, sharing an awkward, but supportive, moment with Tara, a girl in her group. Later, at Callie’s normally scheduled individual therapy session, Callie and “you” discuss Callie’s little brother, Sam, her mother, and Sam’s asthma. Callie reveals she has had to be very self-sufficient due to her family’s prioritizing Sam’s care.

After the session finishes, Callie walks past the dayroom where girls from her group are playing ping pong. She realizes she regrets not staying to watch or play as she leaves.
