Jennifer Dixon

Usually referred to as Jen, she is the protagonist and first-person narrator of the story. After raising two daughters, now college-aged, as a single mom, Jen is now happily married to Ron Dixon, and they live together in the suburbs of Kansas City. Ron and Jen have a child of their own, Max, who is entering kindergarten. Because of Jen's experience raising her two older daughters, she is effectively forced to be class mom for Max's kindergarten class.

Jen's parenting style, while still loving and diligent, is considerably more relaxed than many of the other parents (particularly) moms in the kindergarten class. Jen's intentional sassiness in her all-class emails -- a tone that she tones down considerably when talking in-person -- delights some parents but offends others.
