Friendship

As evidenced by the title, friendship is an important theme in Circle of Friends. Benny and Eve are the major friendship, but there are other friendships, like Mother Clare and Peggy and Jack and Aidan. Benny and Eve become friends at age ten. They have things in common, such as being only children in a country where most children have siblings. Their differences unite them as they defend each other. As adults, they are close even though circumstances threaten to separate them. They talk to each other about their problems and joke with each other. They tell each other things that they do not tell anyone else. The sharing of information makes friends stronger throughout the book. Whenever there are secrets or miscommunications between friends, trouble is not far away.
