Summary

In Chapter 1, Rowan and her twin brother, Ash, are outside the family home but inside the walls, hidden from everyone else. Rowan demands more details about Ash's day. Ash counters, saying their ancestors demanded so much of the Earth that the Earth was destroyed. Rowan explains her situation. She has never been outside the walls of the family home, and no one outside their immediate family knows she exists. If guests arrive, she rushes to hide in one of several hiding places. She studies academics at home, but Rowan depends on Ash for information about the people. Her current area of interest centers around Lark, a girl in Ash's grade. Ash has a crush on her, which makes her extremely interesting to Rowan.
