Summary

Chapter 1

Page 105 -- Section 2 begins with another letter to the reader from Tyler. He addresses Asha again and talks of having trouble refraining from focusing on his budding relationship with Otoh, reminding himself that his true goal is to weave together Mala's story like “a single garment out of myriad parts" (105).

Pages 107 through 114 -- In this chapter, the reader learns about the Mohanty family, glimpsing their monthly routine in the years leading up to Mala’s admission to the residence. Otoh’s mother Elsie complains that they must prepare their own family's food for "that woman" every month (107). She says that if she had known the sort of spell that "that Bird" had put on Ambrose, she would have thought twice before marrying him (107).
