Summary

In Part 2, Chapter 7, Andrews awakes on the morning of the third day of the storm. The storm seems to have subsided at this point, and the party emerges from their buffalo skin casings to find the land completely covered in snow. Miller says that snow will have blocked the passage out of the valley, and that they will have to stay in the valley until the spring thaw arrives in six to eight months. Andrews is stunned by this prospect, but Miller accepts the situation very calmly. Schneider, meanwhile, is furious, and thinks about trying to escape. However, Miller will not give him directions as to the way out, saying that he needs Schneider with them in the valley and that Schneider would surely freeze to death trying to escape through the snow.
