Summary

In Part 2, Chapter 4, the hunting party sets up camp in the valley and makes preparations for hunting. Miller prepares his rifle ammunition, and Schneider shows Andrews how to sharpen skinning knives. Charley Hoge prepares a fire and cooking implements. In Part 2, Chapter 5, the party awakes the next day and eats breakfast before going to the lake that the buffalo use as a watering source. They see a huge herd of buffalo gathered there, and Miller begins to kill them one after another, each with a single shot to the heart. To Andrews’ amazement, the other buffalo are not scared away. They simply stand about grazing. After about 75 kills, Schneider tells Miller to stop because Miller has killed more than they can skin in a day.
