Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

In Chapter 1, Lieutenant Kovacs arrives at a hospital station that is floating in a confidential location in space. The Lieutenant is there because his sleeve, which is apparently how the Lieutenant fights, is damaged from the war that he was fighting in on the Northern Rim. The doctor scans his identity using a bar code on his left temple. She also gives him some medication to sedate him and help with the pain. When the Lieutenant wakes up, he is resting on a fjord, which is a visualization to help him recover while his sleeve is undergoing repair. A virtual Isaac Carrera, who is the founder of the most feared mercenary in the Protectorate, tells the Lieutenant that his sleeve is in repair for 10 days and that he is sending an update of casualties so that the Lieutenant can use his...
