Book 4, Chapter 29 Summary

Sophie's mother cooks her a big breakfast. Sophie picks at her food. She remarks that her mother does not look happy to be home. Her mother confesses that she is pregnant, but afraid. The baby inside her gives her nightmares. Sophie asks her if she is going to have it taken out. Her mother crosses herself. She says every time she thinks about that, she cannot breathe. Sophie asks her mother if she has the nightmares when she is with Marc. Her mother says yes, but she pretends she does not. She does not like being alone. Sophie offers to stay with her longer. Her mother says no; Joseph wants her home. She lends Sophie her car, to guarantee that she will come back and see her. As Sophie drives home,.....
