Summary

Chapter 21

In Chapter 21, the ragged group of people prepare to set off from the camp. Star makes a remark that angers Emma, then she becomes angry when Will calls her a child and shows him the bruises he caused on her arms. He apologizes and says he did not mean to hurt her, but their relationship is at an impasse. As they walk down the mountain, Emma thinks that being with Jake makes her happy while being with Will makes her feel something stronger and scarier that she cannot name. Later, Will tells her that Marshall is a disease specialist who escaped from the breeder camp with him. The other people at the camp are those whom Marshall freed from a work farm with the help of Star’s brother, a CIA technician who has a fortress near the farm and knows how...
