Chapters 38 - 40 Summary
In the morning, McCaleb mulls everything over after Raymond and Graciela are gone. By late afternoon, he feels paranoid and isolated again. He tries to call Jaye and by four in the afternoon, five calls to her have not connected. He calls his machine on the boat and finds one message from Buddy and one from a woman looking for Luther Hatch - a suspect in an old case he and Jaye had. Recognizing her code, he calls the number she left. The investigation has been moved to the bureau, she tells him. He gives her Graciela's number, and five minutes later she calls back confirming they are going to seek an indictment for the murder of Gloria Torres the following morning. She goes over the list of names with him and what she found out on each one. None are likely and Jaye has only one more idea. Perhaps...
