Lipsha is the main character, and he functions on various levels in the story. His constant is that he comes close to maximizing his potential but never quite makes it all the way. One of his biggest wishes is to make everyone on the reservation look at him with pride. Lipsha is in love with Shawnee Ray Toose, and he lets this love lead him in the wrong direction. Lipsha is young and fickle, and he uses his love to make the wrong decisions time and again. Everyone around him knows that he has the ability to be powerful in his own right, but it takes Lipsha a long time to realize it for himself. Besides his weakness for Shawnee Ray, Lipsha has a weak spot for his father, Gerry Nanapush and his mother.....
