Naomi

Naomi is one of the book’s three central characters, and is on one level, its central character and protagonist. The book begins with her (as it follows her morning routine during her secret-filled summers with her family on the Greek island of Hydra) and ends with her (as it portrays her life in the aftermath of that particular summer’s events). She is also the character who motivates most of the book’s central plot, involving the theft from, and killing of, her wealthy father Jimmie. Finally, her character and choices manifest two of the book’s central themes – its consideration of the power and presence of money (money being one of her prime motivators), as well as its consideration of secrets and truths (the keeping of secrets and the hiding of truths likewise being a key motivator).
